BARNSTABLE – Firefighters were called to the Barnstable County Deeds and Probate building at 3195 Main Street (Route 6A) about 1:30 PM. A fire had apparently broken out in the rear of the building, reportedly by a electrical utility room and maintenance area. No injuries were reported.
From Barnstable Fire: At 1:32 PM the Barnstable Fire Department was dispatched to a commercial fire alarm at the Barnstable County Registry of Deeds and Probate building.
Car 212 and Ladder 206 responded to the alarm and found a light smoke condition coming off the roof of the building. A structure fire response was requested bringing in additional engine companies from West Barnstable, Hyannis, and Yarmouth along with additional Barnstable Fire Department resources. A fire was discovered in an accessory building attached to the main Deeds and Probate building.
The fire was quickly extinguished and overhauled to look for fire extension. The accessory building houses the generator for the Deeds and Probate building, and damage was limited to that structure.
There were no injuries reported and the Deeds and Probate building was unoccupied at the time of the fire. The fire is under investigation with no official cause determined at this time. Barnstable Fire Department would like to thank the response from our Mutual Aid partners at this incident, and the Barnstable County Sheriff’s Office Dispatch Center for their help as well.
The Barnstable Fire Department wants to emphasize the importance of working smoke alarms and fire alarms in homes and buildings to alert occupants of hazardous conditions. This is an example of a working fire system that alerted prior to the situation getting any worse.
