BOURNE – Two crashes within an hour Thursday afternoon jammed traffic on the Scenic Highway section of Route 6 between the Sagamore and Bourne Bridges. Bourne Police report that the first crash was a head-on crash that occurred during a heavy downpour of rain. A vehicle traveling eastbound on the Scenic Highway lost control on the downgrade west of Acropolis Drive. The vehicle crossed into the westbound lane striking the second vehicle head on. That vehicle was pushed into a third. A fourth vehicle swerved to avoid the crash and went off the roadway onto the shoulder. Six occupants were transported to an area hospital with non-life threatening injuries. The scenic Highway was shut down for approximately 45 minutes.
The second crash occurred at the traffic signal intersection on the Scenic Highway at the Herring Run Rest Area. A Saturn Vue traveling eastbound turned left and struck a Ford Explorer traveling westbound causing that vehicle to roll over. Four occupants were transported to area hospitals with non-life threatening injuries.
As a result of the accidents, traffic was backed up on secondary roads. Both crashes are still under investigation.
