New details: New Bedford man facing charges after firing gun shots at police officers at Wareham hotel


WAREHAM – Gun shots were reportedly fired at a Wareham hotel sometime after 8 PM Friday. Multiple police units including officers from Bourne rushed to the scene on Rosebrook Way at the TownPlace Suites by Marriott hotel. There no immediate reports of anyone hit by the gunfire. Police were asking people to avoid the area.

Wareham Police posted that an active police investigation is on-going at the Marriott Towne Place Suites. The suspect is in custody and there is no immediate danger to the community.

Update from Wareham Police: On Friday at approximately 8:30 PM, officers from the Wareham Police Department responded to a report of possible gun shots in the bog area to the rear of the Marriott Town Place Suites located at 50 Rosebrook Way. Upon arrival, officers were informed by hotel management of suspicious activity involving a guest who entered the hotel after returning from the bog area directly behind 50 Rosebrook Way, The male was later identified as Scott Desimas of New Bedford. When officers attempted to make contact with Mr. Desimas in his room, three gunshots were fired from inside the room through the door. Two of these shots narrowly missed the officers and traveled through a wall behind which a pool was occupied by two children and one adult. Additionally, another adult and child were sitting by the side of the pool and reported seeing debris falling into the pool, later determined to be sidewall material dislodged by the bullets. (Subsequently, two rounds that came through the wall were located in the pool. The third round was located inside the door frame of the hotel room).

Thankfully, no one was injured during this incident. Mr. Desimas exited the room shortly after the gunfire and was taken into custody without further incident. A search of the room revealed two firearms, including a rifle and handgun. At the time of the shooting, the room was also occupied by a woman and two children who were safely escorted from the premises. The investigation is ongoing and has been turned over to the Wareham Police Department’s detective division.

Chief Walter Correia Jr. commends the responding officers for the quick and decisive actions, which ensured the safety of all hotel guests and staff during this critical incident. He also wishes to recognize the Marriott staff for their exemplary efforts and cooperation throughout the situation and the Massachusetts State Police Crime Scene Unit who responded to process the scene. The swift and processional response by both officers and hotel staff played a crucial role in preventing any harm and maintaining the safety of everyone involved. Chief Correia also noted the exceptional response by neighboring police agencies and the Massachusetts State Police.

Scott Desimas of New Bedford was held on $250,000 bail and will be arraigned Monday in Wareham 4th District Court. He is charged with:
Armed assault with a firearm with intent to murder (4 counts)
Discharging a firearm within 500 feet of a building
Reckless endangerment of a child (2 counts)
Assault with a dangerous weapon (3 counts)
Possession of a firearm without a FID card (subsequent offense)(2 counts)
