SANDWICH – Spaulding Rehabilitation Hospital Cape Cod held a groundbreaking ceremony yesterday to kick off an expansion project that will add 6,000 square feet to the hospital.

Construction is expected to begin soon and finish by September.

The new addition will include two new physician exam/treatment rooms, eight outpatient therapy rooms and a new multi-purpose room on the first floor.

“The Cape has one of the largest concentrations of senior citizens in the country, and the number of residents 65 and older is predicted to more than double between 2015 and 2030,” said David Storto, President of Partners Continuing Care.

The project also includes the renovation of 12,000 square feet of space in the hospital, which is expected to begin next month.

The space will allow the hospital to hire 14 more therapists, two physicians and four support staff over the next few years.

The project is much needed for the Sandwich hospital, according to Spaulding Cape Cod Vice President of Operations Stephanie Nadolny.

“We’ve really just grown so much over the years and we have some great ideas for other programs that we can use to meet the needs of the community, but we’ve been limited and haven’t been able to do it because we didn’t have the space,” said Nadolny.

The $6.3 million project is being funded by Partners HealthCare and donations.

To date, donors have contributed $1.5 million towards the project.

Nadolny acknowledges that the multi-purpose room is the most important addition to the hospital expansion.

“We can do group programs, community programs, post rehab, exercise programs and just a lot of things people have asked us for that we haven’t been able to accommodate,” said Nadolny.

Spaulding Cape Cod is the Spaulding Rehabilitation Network’s southernmost hospital and operates five outpatient centers on the Cape and South Shore.

Those are located in Orleans, Yarmouth, Sandwich, Plymouth and Forestdale.

The Sandwich hospital has served nearly 90,000 patients since opening over 20 years ago.
