HYANNIS — With hundreds of their peers competing around them and amidst stifling heat and humidity, Nauset’s Madaket Nobili, Callie Schadt and Olivia Bois paced their Warriors to a season-opening, 23-33 win over host Barnstable High (0-1) Wednesday afternoon.
The 3.1-mile (5K) course was surrounded by soccer games and football and field hockey practices as nearly 50 runners from both teams competed for first dual meet bragging rights but Nobili, Schadt and Bois did not allow the busy Barnstable campus setting to distract them. Nobili took first-place honors with a time of 21:21 and Schadt and Bois were right on her heels, both at 21:22.
Barnstable freshman Kylie Willis was the top Red Raider of the day in fourth place at 21:38 and Madelyn McCartin was right behind her at 21:39. Nauset’s Emily Wall garnered more points for the Warrior harriers with a sixth-place finish at 22:34.
Barnstable’s Emma Garrity (22:37) and senior Halee Murphy (23:31) finished in 7th and 8th place, respectively, while Renne Gruener-Mitchell (23:50) and Rachel Aalto (23:52) rounded out the top 10 for the hosts. Nauset’s Hannah Brunelle came in 11th place with a time of 23:52 to round out the Warriors’ scoring.
By all appearances, the defending Division 4 state champion Warriors set the right standard with the victory toward defending said title.
The Warriors (1-0) take on Canton at home next Wednesday.
