HARWICH — There was some fire coming from the Harwich Mariners’ dugout last night at BFC Whitehouse Field, and it came in the form of manager Steve Englert’s voice.
NC State’s Brock Deatherage – who earlier in the night belted his first homer of the season – lays down a perfect bunt against Brewster at Whitehouse Field.

With his team enjoying a late-inning lead over the second place Brewster Whitecaps, Englert implored his last-place Mariners in true drill-sergeant fashion to take home the victory.
And his troops did not disappoint their helmsman.
Ahead 5-3 after six complete frames, the hosts tacked on two critical insurance runs in the bottom of the seventh inning for a 7-3 lead that would not be relinquished. The win afforded Harwich the slim hope that if it should defeat Brewster again tonight at Stony Brook Field – on the final day of the regular season – and both the Y-D Red Sox and Chatham Anglers lose, then a three-way tie will be created between all three teams in the mid- to bottom portion of the East Division standings.
Note Dame’s Cavan Biggio (2-4) led off the 7th inning with a single and then Oklahoma’s Sheldon Neuse reached on a critical error by the Brewster left fielder to put two men on. Connor Justus (Georgia Tech) laid down a textbook sacrifice bunt to advance both Biggio and Neuse and Matt Gonzalez (Georgia Tech) walkedto load the bases.

Brock Deatherage (NC State), Biggio, Justus and Gonzalez each had two hits for the Mariners. Colin Lyman (Louisville), Mandy Alvarez (Eastern Kentucky) and JC Escarra (Florida International) each had two hits for the ‘Caps. Deatherage belted his first home run of the season as part of his 2-4, 1 RBI night at the plate. Justus hit his fourth home run of the season and went 2-2 with two RBI.
Cotuit Unloads on Y-D Red Sox in 11-0 Rout at Lowell Park
The host Cotuit Kettleers (17-26) pulled out all the stops last night at Lowell Park en route to a 14-hit, 11-0 barrage over the visiting Y-D Red Sox (22-21) and breathed hope into the Kettleers’ playoffs bid as the regular season winds down today. Y-D now enters the last day of the regular season in a tie with Chatham and a potential three-way tie with Chatham and Harwich should Harwich win and both Y-D and Chatham lose on the season’s final day.
Cotuit’s Saige Jenco (Virgnia Tech) went 2-4 with one RBI last night in the Kettleers’ 11-0 win over Y-D.

Paradise Community College (Arizona) second baseman Josh Rojas – who just this week joined the Kettleers and is headed to play at the University of Hawaii – went 3-4 on the night and Oregon’s Tim Susnara went 2-5 with five RBI to pace the Kettleers. Branden Berry (Cal-State Northridge) went 2-4 with two RBI and Virginia Tech’s Saige Jenco went 2-4 with one RBI to help lead Cotuit to the decisive win.
Mississippi State’s Daniel Brown got the win after 6.1 innings of work. He walked three and scattered four hits while striking out four.
Cotuit heads to Wareham tonight for a must-win match-up.
Bourne Braves Stage Comeback, Snatch Victory from Wareham Gatemen
The old baseball adage that “walks will kill ya’ every time” rang true last night at Doran Park as the Bourne Braves (21-20-2) came back with two runs in the 8th to defeat the visiting Wareham Gatemen (16-25-2), 5-4.
Wareham’s loss made today a must-win situation for the Gatemen as they welcome the revitalized Cotuit Kettleers to Spillane Field for a no-holds barred battle for a playoff spot. The Cape League playoffs begin Monday night.

With Wareham ahead, 4-3, Louisville’s Brendan McKay led off the bottom of the 8th inning with a walk and then Peter Alonso (Florida) reached on an error to put two men on. McKay was nabbed at third base on an ensuing Reid Humphrey’s (Mississippi State) grounder for the first out but the momentum had alreayd been created for the hosts.
Florida Atlantic’s CJ Chatham rode that wave of momentum and laced a 2-1 pitch for a double to drive in both Alonso and Humphreys as the Braves took a the 5-4 lead. Chatham went 2-4 on the night with two RBI and Humphreys went 2-4 as well. Nick Solak added a 2-4, one RBI effort from the leadoff spot for the Braves.
Florida Tech southpaw Tyler Deel got the win for Bourne. He went 2.2 innings and struck out three while allowing no runs. Indiana State’s Austin Conway got the save with a scoreless ninth inning.
Wareham’s Andrew Calica, Charlie Warren, Andrew Knizer and Dave MacKinnon (Hartford) all had multiple hits, with MacKinnon going 3-5.
Chatham Bows Down to Host Orleans Firebirds at Eldredge Park
There just may not be any way to stop the Orleans Firebirds (30-12-1) this season.

The visiting Chatham Anglers jumped out to a 2-0 lead in the third inning only to watch that lead evaporate as Orleans used a combination of hits, walks and errors to plate three runs for a 3-2 lead in he bottom of the third inning.
Miami slugger Willie Abreu solidified the victory for the ‘Birds with a screaming bomb off the right centerfield bandshell stage in the bottom of the fourth inning.
Orleans, the East Division regular season champions, will head to Chatham to end the regular season tonight at 7:00 at Veterans Field. The Anglers could be forced into a three-way tie with Y-D and Harwich should both Chatham and Y-D lose tonight.
Ohio State lefty Tanner Tully got the win for the Firebirds. He went 6.0 innings and struck out four. He is now 2-0 on the season.
