SANDWICH – The annual Barnstable County Regional Emergency Planning Committee tabletop exercise will be held on Wednesday.

The exercise, which will focus on a mass-caualty HAZMAT incident, will bring together town officials, first responders, support agencies and emergency planners.

Emergency Planner for the Barnstable County Regional Emergency Planning Committee Amy Alati says the mock incidents are elaborate.

“The scenarios we use are a little more dramatic so we can involve more agencies,” she said. “But at the end of the day, when there is a real life incident this type of HAZMAT practice and planning helps our first responders.”

The all-day exercise will be held at the Sandwich Hollows Golf Club and will be a collaboration with the Massachusetts Maritime Academy.

Cadets at the academy majoring in emergency management are preparing and presenting the exercise.

“It provides a unique learning experience for [the cadets],” Alati said. “They can put this on their resume saying I have all this certification and training and I implemented a regional emergency planning exercise.”
