PROVINCETOWN – A structure fire was reported in Provincetown about 3:45 PM Saturday. Fire crews reported heavy smoke coming from a building at 284A Commercial Street which is set back near Bradford Street just east of Ryder Street. Mutual aid from surround towns was also responding.
Shortly after 4 PM, the fire appeared to be under control. No injuries were reported.
Update: Provincetown Fire reports that they have had a steady Saturday.
In the morning tones went off for a transformer fire in the area of Brown Street and Fritz’s Way.
Later on crews responded to Nelson Avenue for a dryer that was smoking.
And later in the afternoon, a structure fire was reported on Bradford Street. Engine 193 responded with 4 career personnel who made entry and knocked the fire down. Ladder 192, staffed with 3 call personnel provided ladder operations. A mutual aid first alarm assignment was called which prompted a line response from Truro, Wellfleet and Eastham to the scene.
Provincetown Fire Department would like to remind the public about electrical hazards and particularly with this cold weather, please be mindful of the dangers in using space heaters. Don’t leave them plugged in and unattended. Be mindful when they are in use when children or pets are around them (they are a burn hazard and can easily tip over and become a fire hazard). Check that the area around a space heater is clear of objects, furniture, clothing, bedding, curtains, papers etc. Check for damaged cords regularly and always plug them directly into an outlet. If you see something suspicious or smell something concerning, please call 911 and report it. An early response can help prevent property damage and a bigger tragedy.
Thankfully there were no reported injuries related to any of these calls.
Thank you to the Provincetown Police Department, Truro Fire Department, Wellfleet Fire Department and Eastham Fire Department for your quick response and adventuring out in the snow to assist this afternoon.

Editor’s note: This appears to be the first major fire since the Provincetown Fire Department transitioned from an all volunteer department to a combination full time/call system last July. Acting Fire Chief James Roderick immediately activated a per-determined “line response” which alerted fire units from as far away as Orleans to respond.
