HARWICH – The Town of Harwich has been chosen to receive state grant funding through the Safe Routes to School program.
The town’s application for Harwich Elementary School was one of 14 selected across the state to receive funding for infrastructure improvements surrounding the school.
The program provides funds for sidewalk improvements, pedestrian and bicycling facilities and traffic diversion improvements.
While the exact project cost will be determined later, the town’s application estimated the project would cost around $685,000.
The program is sponsored by MassDOT with funds from the Federal Highway Administration.
“This grant provides much-needed sidewalk and intersection improvements that surround our school,” said Harwich Elementary School Principal Mary Oldach. “We hope that the enhanced pedestrian experience will encourage more families to consider walking to school, and also provide expeditious exit routes during school safety drills.”
Safe Routes to School program school partners also receive year-round pedestrian and bicycle safety education instruction, as well as engagement initiatives tailored to meet each school’s health, safety, and environmental priorities.
