ONSET- The Save Buzzards Bay Coalition has announced that approximately 50 acres of salt marshes along Shell Point Bay have now been put into protection, paving the way for visitors to enjoy paddling, boating, fishing, and exploring.
The salt marsh land and the buffering coastal forest are located along a scenic bend in the road out to Great Neck, across the street from an active cranberry farm.
This location plays home to numerous species of fish, shellfish, and water birds, and will soon be used as a site promoting clean water.
The decision to place this land into protection stems from the Coalition’s ‘Onset Bay Center Project’ that aims to offer high-quality on-the-water programming for community members of all ages.
Current protected land by the group includes sites in Onset Bay, Shell Point Bay marshes, Wickets Island, and Burgess Point.
In an effort to accommodate visitors, the Coalition has announced that a small parking area, trail, and overlook will be created in the near future so that local residents can access the property, and enjoy its scenic views.
