HARWICH – This weekend is the grand opening for one of the oldest businesses in Harwich. The Pleasant Lake General Store has been closed for about a year.

Elaine Pekarcik and Heather Gaskill, owners of the sandwich shop Local Flavor on Underpass Road in Brewster, are moving their business to the iconic general store on Route 124 in Harwich.

The store has been closed for about a year.

Pekarcik said they have owned their sandwich shop for about eight years and were looking to expand but there was not room to expand at their current site.

“We were looking for a location and we found it. It just happened to be an old fashioned general store,” she said.

Having grown up in Brewster, Pekarcik said she has long known the business. “When I was a kid, we used to ride our bikes up here to get candy,” she said.

Pekarcik and Gaskill are preparing to open the store on Friday or Saturday. Pekarcik said that as they have been getting ready to open, a lot of people have stopped by to share their stories.

“They tell us their story, how they have been coming here for forty years. It used to be a post office apparently, so they used to have mailboxes here. We’ve heard it all and I’m sure we’re going to continue to hear the stories as time went on,” she said.
