BREWSTER – Inmates from the Barnstable County House of Correction recently erected a surplus tent for the Brewster Fire Department.
The building will enable the department to keep a portion of their equipment and stores dry during ongoing construction of a new firehouse.
Donated to Brewster from a military surplus program on Joint Base Cape Cod, it sits on a parcel of land set back off Linnell Landing Road — a small street connecting Route 6A to one of the town’s beaches.

Meanwhile, two other inmates are busy laying the bags in place, which means along the inside canvas rim of the tent. This will prevent it from blowing away during high winds.
Getting both the tent and the inmate labor at no cost will enable Fire Chief Robert Moran to get a little more bang for his buck as the new station building project. He was happy to get it and Barnstable County Sheriff Jim Cummings says he was “happy to provide it.” It’s not the first time his office has help Brewster FD. Several years ago, an artistically gifted inmate painted a full-wall mural inside fire and rescue headquarters.
Chief Moran buttons down the flap to prevent any updrafts from swirling into the tent. It is rapidly filling with equipment and will likely be full sooner rather than later. Vel-cro® is a wonderful thing.
