As the three-day weekend approaches, you may be wondering what there is to do here on the Cape. Not to worry – there are plenty of events going on to occupy your time and allow you to enjoy that long weekend to the fullest. Here are a few suggestions:
CHECK OUT THE YARMOUTH SEASIDE FESTIVAL
The Yarmouth Seaside Festival, celebrating its 38th anniversary this year, will take place Oct. 8-10 (weather permitting, of course). The festival has grown over the years into a gala event which boasts a craft fair of more than 125 crafters from all over the country, musical entertainment, high‐quality children’s events, a kayak and canoe race, a 5K road race, pie‐eating contests, a parade, a fireworks display, and so much more. This is a free event, founded in 1978 by South Yarmouth resident Jan Butler, in the hope of creating community spirit and pride in the Town of Yarmouth. SIT A WHILE WITH KAMI LYLE
A “Sit-A-While” is an evening of great music and a gathering of friends set in a variety of cozy, ocean-side settings across Cape Cod. Each Sit-A-While showcases Cape Cod’s beautiful venues as it moves around to different towns. Two national touring visiting guests, Big Al Anderson and Jill Sobule, will perform their favorite songs on Saturday, Oct. 8, at The Kami Lyle Sit-A-While…Real Songs, Real Writers, Fake Fireplace TV Series. VISIT YOUR FAVORITE SEASONAL RESTAURANT
It’s no surprise to anyone that many of the wonderful summer restaurants here on the Cape close for the off-season. Now’s the time to have that last delicious meal that you won’t have a chance to enjoy again until next year!
Baxter’s Cape Cod, in Hyannis, is one of the oldest and most well-known restaurants in the area and offers a wide variety of fresh seafood, burgers, and family fare. It was built over the water and has great views of the harbor activities, and closes this weekend (baxterscapecod.com).
The Chart Room, in Cataumet, is located onboard a converted barge on Red Brook Harbor, inside the Kingman Yacht Center. The Chart Room has long become a summer tradition for many. Some come for the breathtaking sunsets, freshly prepared entrees and nightly entertainment at the piano bar. Others come just to have a drink with friends on “the lawn” while enjoying the friendly, casual atmosphere. Don’t forget, they close this weekend for the season (chartromocataumet.com).
Landfall Restaurant, in Woods Hole, is open into December. In business for over 70 years, Landfall’s spacious dining room (capacity 180) presents a spectacular oceanfront dining experience to enjoy fresh local cuisine – lobsters, swordfish clams, scallops and seasonal fin fish. In case you didn’t know, the Grecian urn, called an amphora, which hangs from the rafters, came from the Aegean Sea, off the coast of Greece. It was pulled up in a fisherman’s net beside the island of Evvia, and is over 2,000 years old (landfallwoodshole.com).
BY THE BAY WEEKEND FESTIVAL OF ART
Don’t miss this impressive annual fine art and craft show Saturday, Oct. 8, and Sunday, Oct. 9, at Drummer Boy Field on Route 6A in Brewster. Spend the weekend visiting with the area’s talented artists and artisans. Treat yourself to one of the paintings, watercolors, folk art pieces, photography or hand-crafted jewelry. Select that perfect gift for friends and family or just pick up a find that will make you smile all winter long. CAPE SYMPHONY PRESENTS “GREATEST SONGS OF THE ’70S”
The 1970s was a decade of great pop and folk singers/songwriters. They personally wrote and performed songs that beautifully expressed rich and sophisticated emotions, and this music became the soundtrack for a generation. Who can forget the profound songs of Jim Croce, Cat Stevens or Gordon Lightfoot, or the unique styles of James Taylor, Carole King, Joni Mitchell and Neil Diamond? The Cape Symphony Orchestra has two fabulous singers/songwriters to present these hits – Swearingen & Kelli. So grab your favorite bell-bottom jeans and relive this great music one more time! ACADEMY PLAYHOUSE PRESENTS MONTY PYTHON’S SPAMALOT!
Find your grail at The Academy Playhouse, and experience one of the greatest Broadway musicals of the modern age. The Tony Award-winning best musical, SPAMALOT! Lovingly ripped off from the classic film comedy “Monty Python and the Holy Grail,” SPAMALOT retells the legend of King Arthur and his Knights of the Round Table, and features a bevy of beautiful show girls, not to mention cows, killer rabbits, and French people. NIGHT WARRIORS
The forest will come alive on Oct. 8 with a game of glowing adventure, where nighttime thieves must try and steal the glowing jewels from the nighttime warriors. Timbernook – Cape Cod sponsors this fun event where children ages 6-11 can take turns building hideouts and painting their faces with glow-in-the-dark paint.
