Engine Failure Sidelines SSA Freight Boat Katama

WOODS HOLE – Engine trouble has put the Steamship Authority freight boat Katama out of service.

A statement from the boat line said one of the vessel’s main engines failed while traveling to Vineyard Haven on its 6:30 a.m. trip from Woods Hole.

The Coast Guard gave permission for the vessel to return to Woods Hole under the power of one engine.

All the vessel’s trips for Tuesday have been canceled and the vessel is heading to the SSA’s Fairhaven repair facility.

“Steamship Authority personnel are in the process of evaluating the vessel and determining a course of action for the vessel’s subsequent trips. We are working on reaching out to our customers who had reservations on board the Katama to rebook them on other trips,” according to the statement.

Standby on trips leaving the island is temporarily closed but should reopen late Tuesday.

The residual delays experienced as a result of the Katama being unexpectedly berthed in Woods Hole should resolve throughout the day.
